Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe: everything you could dream of

Krzysztof Kowalski 4 min read

Porsche Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupe..... a long name, a long list of equipment and a long list of compliments about what the car has to offer. This Porsche is an SUV with supercar performance, but with the practicality of a family car and the luxuries of a limousine. The German company is redefining the term "all in one". The only downside is the price.

Porsche turned to electromobility fairly late. After all, the Nissan Leaf has been on the market since 2008, followed by more models, both 100% electric and plug-in hybrids. But the German sports car maker is catching up very quickly. The stunning Porsche Taycan is purely electric, there is also a hybrid Panamera, and now the Cayenne range is gaining a flagship plug-in hybrid variant. The Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid and Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé draw their power, a breathtaking 680 hp, from a clever combination of a 4-litre V8 engine (550 hp) and an electric motor (136 hp). The drive is managed by an 8-speed Tiptronic S gearbox. Because the electric motor catapults the car from a standstill, you feel that maximum torque is available just above idle. Acceleration? 0-100 km/h in 3.8 s. Top speed? 5 km/h short of a neat 300 km/h. Fuel consumption? You could say zero, because the first 40 km can be driven on electricity. That is why the manufacturer quotes average fuel consumption of 3.7-3.9 l/100 km.

I complained about the weight of the Volvo XC60 T8 (you will find my impressions of it here) and of the hybrid BMW X5 (you can read about it here), but the Porsche, at 2598 kg, is the most "overweight" of them all. And that is the version with a carbon roof, meant to bring those figures down. But there you go: engines, batteries, hardware.....

Like Porsche's other plug-in hybrids, the new top variant of the Cayenne family is also one of the sportiest vehicles in the premium segment. It owes this, of course, to its hybrid drive. The two motors, combustion and electric, are connected via a separating clutch housed inside the hybrid module. As in other plug-in hybrids, you can force the car to run on electricity alone, and at speeds of up to 135 km/h. The electric motor can also be used in other modes to give an extra boost of power. They are selected with a rotary dial, and the modes are Hybrid Auto, Sport and Sport Plus.

The 14.1 kWh lithium-ion battery is mounted at the rear of the vehicle, under the boot floor. Charging a completely flat battery from a conventional household socket takes about 6 hours.

With optional extras the car can cost as much as 1 million zlotys, but even the "basic" version has almost everything: the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) roll stabilisation system, the Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) rear differential lock, the high-performance Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system, 21-inch alloy wheels, the Sport Chrono package and a full suite of connectivity features, including online navigation with real-time traffic information, intelligent online voice control and extensive Porsche Connect services with a public charging station finder. Standard equipment includes LED headlights, cruise control with a speed limiter, a camera-based pedestrian protection system and front and rear parking assistance. It goes without saying that the cabin's cooling and heating can be controlled remotely.

To say the car is not cheap is an understatement. Prices for the Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid Coupé start at 864 thousand zlotys.
